What is the Opportunity

The Western Powerhouse Growth Programme has been created by Innovation Point to bid for Innovate UKs ‘Regional Angel Accelerator Pilot’.  Innovate UK, the UKs innovation funding body, will give 2 winning regional bidders up to £1million to be distributed as grants within their stated region.  For this money to be release into companies, they must also secure private funding from angel investors.

What could this mean for you

The programme has been designed to deliver angels with better quality deal flow; highly innovate SMEs; lowered investment risk; grant support and wrap-around services.

We are not looking for an upfront commitment of your investment funds, but an agreement to work with us on a company by company basis to consider deals.  The project will last for two years.

What will Innovation Point do

Innovation Point has been living and working at the cutting edge of technology since 2015, finding ideas and driving over £2.5m of investment funding through UK R&D grant funding, private equity seed rounds and successful accelerator programmes.

We’re a small team with a formidable background spanning business, investment and technology, and are clearly focused on building strong relationships within the UK digital innovation and funding markets and wider global investment scene.  Using what we know, we nurture, inform and cultivate the best of tomorrow’s innovation.

We are setting up and managing this project and will be managing the consortium bid into Innovate UK. When successful, we will work with Innovate UK to oversee the grant fund and with our investment partners to distribute the money into relevant projects.

Why work with Innovation Point?

Innovation Point live and breath this type of project.  We have a dedicated team in place who have recently bid for, won and delivered a similar Innovate UK funded competition to run an equity backed accelerator programme.

We have the market knowledge and insight in this area, regularly used by tech and industry media as experts on investment and innovation.

We have experience in building strong collaborative partnerships.  For example, we are leading on the 5G strategy for Wales through which we can help to realise new business and investment opportunity.  We have also been key  in setting up the partnership project involving Welsh Government and Cardiff University on the National Software Academy and similarly with the National Cyber Academy at the University of South Wales.

Over the past two years, Innovation Point has supported over 150 applications into Innovate UK, helping innovative companies here secure over £3M for R&D projects. We therefore have track record in winning competitions with Innovate UK.

In 2017, Innovation Point pulled together a UK-wide winning consortium bid, for a £1.5m early stage disruptive tech accelerator competition from Innovate UK, bringing the first ever equity backed Accelerator to Wales seeding 9 quality tech firms from across Europe and the US.

We have a strong network of partners and collaborators through our wide range of existing business projects, through our work organising “Digital Festival’ a tech & innovation conference and exhibition attracting over 2,000 delegates annually and because of our monthly networking events on the first Tuesday of each month – Digital Tuesday.

As well as our in-house team having unrivalled experience, our Board of Directors are also leading industry figures in Accelerator and growth programmes.  Our Chairman, Professor Simon Gibson CBE set up the Alacrity Foundation, our CEO David Warrender is chairman of the Airbus Endeavr programme, Paul Matthews, a Board member and Chief Executive of Monmouthshire County Council has recently set up a MedTech Hub in the region and another of our Board members, Simon Powell is an investor within InspireWales.

We have also supported numerous companies achieving private equity deals and other R&D focused grant funds, so we have the skills to work with companies to create innovative projects, and we are experienced at writing and submitting successful competition bids.

Why are we calling it the

'Western Powerhouse Growth Project'

The Innovate UK Regional Angel Investment Pilot is designed to increase angel investment in innovative R&D companies outside of London.

The Western Powerhouse Growth Program will focus on Wales, the West Midlands and the South West of England region – also known as the UK Government’s ‘Western Powerhouse’ a region able to rival the Northern Powerhouse  and the Midlands Engine.

When successful, our Western Powerhouse Growth Program will be in a position to distribute up to £1million in grant funds across both sides of the Severn Estury and up to Anglesey in the North.

"Innovation Point have helped us gain valuable feedback from high profile product leaders {introduction} to investors... this is the first time in 10 years in the local tech industry that I have received such important help."

Dan Lewis, CEO Digital Profile (Digital Dozen 2016 company)
